November 2023: On-Campus Internships: Launching and Managing a New Program

In Fall of 2021, Virginia Tech Career and Professional Development (CPD) successfully launched Campus internEXP with the hope of providing students with quality work integrated learning experiences. In our first year, we worked with faculty and staff across campus to provide 27 students with unique paid internship experiences. Over the next two years, the team learned a great deal about the ups and downs of piloting an on-campus internship program. The presenter will share information on how CPD launched and manages Campus internEXP, how to gain buy-in from faculty and staff, and how on-campus internships support DEI efforts.

About Julia:

Julia is a lifelong Hokie and alumna of Virginia Tech where she studied Human Development and minored in Psychology. She graduated with her Master’s in Counselor Education from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2019 where she concentrated her studies in College Student Development and Counseling. Julia previously served as a Career Advisor at Virginia Commonwealth University where she directly interacted with students and campus partners through one-on-one advising and programming. In July of 2021, Julia returned to Virginia Tech to serve as the Assistant Director of Professional Development and Experiential Programs at Virginia Tech Career and Professional Development where she manages an on-campus internship program called Campus internEXP. Julia has been a member of CEIA since 2021 and has enjoyed the opportunity to present on topics she is passionate about as well as build relationships with other career professionals in the co-op and internship space. 

October 2023: AI-Powered Student Career Success: Enhancing Job Search Strategies

In this webinar we will share strategies for integrating AI-based platforms into career services, enabling us to better equip students with the skills and knowledge needed for a successful career search. We will share easy to adopt lesson plans and activities that leverage the strengths of generative AI systems such as ChatGPT to assist students and alum in drafting resumes, preparing for job interviews, researching employers, and engaging in career exploration.

About the Presenters:

Michelle Zaff is a Senior Cooperative Education Faculty Coordinator at Northeastern University. She works with students studying Criminal Justice and manages a broad portfolio of employer partners including law firms, governmental agencies, NGO’s and non-profits. For three years, she has co-led an experiential learning course that brings students into the Suffolk County Jail to teach career design skills to incarcerated individuals. She has been a leader in leveraging the positive attributes of generative AI to empower students toward job search success.

Jen Guillemin is a co-op faculty member at the D’Amore McKim School of Business at Northeastern University and co-founder of Creative Re/Frame, a consulting practice that works at intersection of arts, business, and social impact. For three years, she has co-led an experiential learning course that brings students into the Suffolk County Jail to teach career design and entrepreneurial skills to incarcerated individuals. Before coming to Northeastern, Jen served as the inaugural Director of the Boston University arts leadership and innovation program, the Interim Director of the BU School of Visual Arts and the Founding Director of the BU Visual Arts Summer Institute. Her professional collaborations have led her to teach in prisons and homeless shelters, to create community engaged projects in Boston and to teach classes and publish research on creative entrepreneurship and the creative economy.

October 2023: Landscape Analysis of Oregon Community College Cooperative Work Experience (CWE) Programs

Ever ask yourself how your co-op / cooperative work experience (CWE) model compares with the peer institutions in your area? Wonder how all the CWE professionals at other institutions are doing the work you do? In Fall 2022, Gerry Meenaghan, Cooperative Education Coordinator at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon, had just that opportunity. Over 11 weeks, he toured around the state of Oregon speaking with representatives of CWE programs at Oregon’s 17 community colleges, conducting interviews, gathering statistical data and delivering surveys to produce a “landscape analysis” of community college CWE programs.

About Gerald:

Gerald Meenaghan currently serves as a Cooperative Education Coordinator with Lane Community College in Lane Country, Oregon. Gerry has extensive teaching and higher education experience in the United States and abroad. He is also a longtime member and contributor to CEIA.  He has worked with hundreds of community college students in a number of degree programs, and hundreds of human resources and hiring managers in a wide variety of industries.
